WHY DO WE HAVE LEADERS?
Such a silly question! Why, isn’t it obvious? They show us what to do. Without them, we would be lost, like the proverbial shepherd and his flock. Society could not function correctly. Since we depend on capitalistic enterprise, we need leaders to show us the way so that we can collectively continue to live and provide for our families. We also depend on republican government, needing leaders there to make wise decisions so that we may pursue our lives, liberty, and happiness.
In truth though, we count on our leaders to give us something more than just vision and intelligence. Otherwise, we could just go back to subsistence agriculture or hunting and gathering on our own.

ABRAHAM LINCOLN LET GO OF A DESPERATELY NEEDED VICTORY FOR THE SAKE OF INTEGRITY.
Union victories on the battlefield early in the Civil War were nearly non-existent, so when sailors from a Union naval vessel boarded a British ship called The Trent and captured two Confederate representatives headed to Great Britain to gain its support, Americans went wild.
There were celebrations in the streets of New York City, the media printed huge headlines, and there was a smile or two cracked in the White House.

Marilyn’s hero was Abraham Lincoln: “I used to read everything I could find about him,” she wrote in her (ghosted) autobiography, My Story. “He was the only famous American who seemed most like me, at least in his childhood.”
Marilyn Monroe also reportedly kept a photograph of Lincoln by her bedside as a replacement for the father that she never knew.

NOTHING GAINS THEIR TRUST AND LOYALTY MORE.
Exhibit A
The first example of this advice that Abraham Lincoln might offer was painfully obvious: The Union Army defended Washington D.C., Pennsylvania, and Maryland from General Robert E. Lee’s incursions into the North.
That Lincoln, through the Union Army, was able to successfully protect Union soil added a great sense of security to Northern citizens who were in despair of the South actually conquering them instead of vice versa.
Despite their want for offensive success, Generals George McClellan and George Meade proved to be very good when it came to defense of their own territory, and their respective victories at Antietam, Maryland and Gettysburg, Pennsylvania were no small thing to the people of the Union.

AN OPEN LETTER TO THE TYPICAL MANAGER
Dear Typical Manager,
We’d like to preface this letter by saying that there is no excuse for our bad behavior. However, facts are facts, and it’s time somebody presented this oft-repeated story without the sugar-coating.
Last year, you collectively lost $370 billion due to “low employee engagement” because you are a bad boss.
As we’ve all read on leadership and management blogs for the past month, that $370 billion is not fictitious. It’s the eighth year in a row Gallup has done this study, and the numbers pretty much look the same every year. Three hundred seventy is just 2013’s number.
